5 WAYS DIET AFFECTS OUR SKIN

We've all heard the saying "you are what you eat," and when it comes to skincare, there's some truth to that. Every cell in our body is made up of the vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients we consume every day, so it makes perfect sense that what we eat can affect our skin.

If you've ever struggled with skin issues like acne, oily skin, or dryness, you've probably read somewhere that you should cut out dairy or go completely plant-based because that will cure all your problem areas. While that's not necessarily the answer, understanding how diet affects your skin is the first step to understanding how to overcome all your problems...

If you follow an anti-inflammatory diet that includes plenty of whole foods, healthy fats, and no sugar or refined starches, you will see immense improvement in your skin while increasing your intake of anti-inflammatory nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids.

1. INCREASE OR IMPROVEMENT OF INFLAMMATION

Skin problems can lead to inflammation, so it makes sense that what you eat can either increase or reduce skin inflammation. If you follow an anti-inflammatory diet that includes plenty of whole foods, healthy fats, and no sugar or refined starches, you will see immense improvement in your skin while increasing your intake of anti-inflammatory nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids. On the other hand, a diet high in refined sugar will cause inflammation and make any existing problems even worse.

2. TRIGGERING OR CONTROLLING SKIN CONDITIONS

People with sensitive skin, oily or dry skin, or acne-prone skin may understand that skin can be triggered by diet and also by what you put on it. Certain research has found that acne can be aggravated by dairy products and that other skin conditions can be triggered by vasodilators such as alcohol and spices. Food intolerances can also be triggers. For long-term skin problems, consulting a doctor should be considered to rule out intolerances and find out what might be triggering the problems.

3. SUPPORT OR PREVENT HEALTHY INTESTINAL BACTERIA

Our gut contains thousands of different strains of bacteria, all working in perfect harmony to help our body stay healthy. If there is an imbalance or an overabundance of bacteria, this can manifest itself in skin problems. A varied diet or a daily probiotic supplement, on the other hand, guarantees that our gut bacteria are in balance.

4. EQUILIBRIUM OR INCREASE IN BLOOD SUGAR

Foods that have a high glycemic index cause a sharp rise in blood sugar, which has been linked to premature aging. Regular consumption of such foods, eg refined sugar and flour, can cause accelerated skin aging. On the other hand, maintaining a good blood sugar balance with a diet high in whole foods and other natural foods will help ensure that the skin stays young and healthy.

Studies show that vitamin C supports collagen production and zinc can help fight acne. In addition, omega-3 fatty acids improve the lipid barrier and help with hydration.

5. NOURISHING OR DECOMPOSING

Healthy skin requires a variety of nutrients. These nutrients nourish the skin and help it maintain a balanced condition. However, without the necessary nutrients, skin can suffer from problems such as acne, dryness and even premature aging. Research shows that vitamin C supports collagen production and that zinc can help fight acne. In addition, omega-3 fatty acids improve the lipid barrier and help with hydration. There are many ways that healthy eating can help your skin, so choose naturally-sourced foods with plenty of variety wherever possible.

Clearly, a diet focused on natural, whole foods is best for your skin, but that doesn't mean you have to restrict yourself completely. Find out what your triggers might be, eat well, and use products with all-natural ingredients. This approach will help you manage any skin concerns and keep your skin looking younger and healthier for longer.
